There really "should" be thousands of reviews here for this remarkably candid story of wit, wisdom, and hope, because this book is not merely for those who struggle with autoimmune diseases, nor only for those who journey with others facing these daunting diseases, but for anyone who has faced any number of life's endless challenges and calamities. After reading "Drying my Tears" by Liz Wilkey I can finally and truthfully say I now understand what is meant when one says, "I could NOT put this book down!" or "This book is a must read!" If you are going on vacation to the beach or are even planning to, you must have this book with you.
While the specific subject is dealing with autoimmune diseases of the seemingly limitless variety, this book is an invaluable resource for all people regardless of race, creed, color, national origin or sexual orientation. With uncanny wit and wisdom, Liz successfully draws you into her indomitable spirit and allows you to laugh and cry in the rare experience of "laughing till you cry" and "crying till you laugh" both at the same time! I've already read it three times and it's still on my bedside table because I find myself reading a chapter (all of which are short and captivating as well as somehow so soothing) before I slip off into slumber, and when I awaken to face the mysteries of each new day. I have just ordered 10 copies for my friends and family members since I would be totally remiss if I did not. My only advice is to stop reading my review, buy the book, read it and write a review worthy of your own unique value as a fellow traveler on this tiny planet we all call home. Thank you Liz Wilkey, I long for your next book and really want to listen to your audio copies of both.

This is a book that shouts “You are not alone!” The author, Liz Wilkey, gives a voice to the silent sufferers of auto-immune diseases specifically, but also to all folks who feel alone in their troubles and difficulties. The author, through anecdotes of her own family’s struggles with auto-immune diseases (including her own), acknowledges that to suffer silently is unknowingly difficult, but also no reason to lose one’s sense of humor and hope. Mrs. Wilkey is quick-witted and razor sharp in her words, and those words will make you cry and laugh, smile and reflect, feel sympathy for others and think critically about yourself.

This book is about auto-immune diseases, and the research, information & advice within are entirely suitable for the topic at hand. For those who have never been diagnosed with such an illness (like me), however, it serves as an examination of the essentials in life: family, parenthood, faith, humor. It is simultaneously a companion for those undergoing similar trials and a pathway to empathize with others, since everyone is going through something.

I’m fairly sure you’ve never read a writer like Mrs. Wilkey – her text is filled with alliterations, pop culture references, metaphors and similes, hyphen-laden descriptions, and exemplifying lists (such as the one I just built here). This all means that the read is quick and easy, if it is not always light. The serious undertone of the anxieties that auto-immune diseases can produce is pervasive, as it ought to be. Dealing with an auto-immune disease is far from simple (as I’ve learned), and the emotions it breeds are just as complicated. Liz Wilkey here presents herself as an honest soul, and spares the reader from little – and that’s precisely why this book is so valuable.

If you deal with an auto-immune disease yourself, read this book. If you know someone who does, read this book. If you’ve ever felt lonely, read this book. If you’ve never felt lonely, read this book.

I liked that she approached the issue from all angles January 30, 2018
Liz Wilkey simplifies the complicated world of autoimmune diseases with humor and wit, and managed to find relevant quotes from Dr. Seuss to place at the beginning of each chapter. I read it nearly in one sitting. I liked that she approached the issue from all angles: as a patient, mother, wife; as recipient of medications, practitioner of Eastern and Western arts for healing. She provides her own personal experience with...Read More

The short review: This is a must-read primer for anybody directly or indirectly affected by one or more autoimmune diseases, and even for those who aren’t even sure what an autoimmune disease is.

The longer review: With my own family history of autoimmune diseases, but little real understanding of what those diseases were or what they meant to my relatives, I thought that this book might help me understand what...Read More

Fabulous read! December 17, 2017
Liz Wilkey has written a humorous and interesting book. I couldn’t put it down. If I had the opportunity to tell Michael what you don’t want him to know, I couldn’t because the thought got away! It went to thought heaven, and you know about that!

What a wonderful gift Liz Wikey has given to the world November 28, 2017
What a wonderful gift Liz Wikey has given to the world! So many of her reflections resounded deeply with my mother and her experiences living with Lupus for 30 plus years. She would often say, Other people have it worse than me." Family and friends would come visit during a crisis but disappear during the many years in between. My mother would have loved your book. I am so grateful to Liz Wikey for sharing her story.

Courage in the Face of Monumental Struggles November 21, 2017
I thought the book was very well written and witty. I love all of the Dr. Seuss quotes at the beginning of each chapter. Even though the author has been through more than any one person should have to go through and continues to go through, I am amazed by her positive attitude and that she hasn't let this bring her down. I admire her courage and hope that all those who read the book will benefit from her insights and experi...Read More

An insightful journey into the world of autoimmunity.
